Dimitri Mitriopoulos, International Music Competition Medal

Dimitri Mitropoulos (1896-1960) was born in Athens and arrived in the United States in 1936, where his musical talent earned him national recognition. He led the Minneapolis Symphony, was the conductor of the New York Philharmonic from 1949 to 1958, and endowed a scholarship fund for music at Brigham Young University. Research has not confirmed the purpose of William Zorach’s medal, but it may have been awarded as part of the Dimitri Mitropoulos International Conducting Competition
