Notes: A complete provenance is given in Ralph McCabe, “Rare Painting Brought to Light Here,” The Sunday Star, Washington D.C., September 27, 1931: Commissioned by Benona Howard, New York, for travelling exhibition raising funds for Sanitary Commission, Union Army, but he he died before completion and it was kept by artist. Artist exhibited it New York 1866, then stored it in the museum of the Ordnance Bureau. In 1886 it was removed "temporarily" to a safe deposit warehouse; purchased in 1890 for $25,000 by a collector, stored in Washington Safe Deposit Co. on Pennsylvania Ave. The warehouse was condemned in 1931; painting was sold 1931 to Margaret Garber Blue.
