Jacob Lawrence with "The Visitors"

Arnold Newman, one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, crafted an approach to photography called "environmental photography," which combined sitter and surroundings in a manner revealing the personality in front of the lens. His image of Jacob Lawrence, taken in 1959 with the then-unfinished painting The Visitors (now in the Dallas Museum of Art collection), resents both subjects as works in progress: Lawrence as an artist at mid-career, and the painting in the middle stages of completion.
