Mates

Two of Frank Benson’s abiding interests combine in this work: his great love of hunting, as well as his fascination with the flattened space, cropping, and abstraction of Japanese prints, which increasingly informed his late work. Benson was one of the leaders of the Boston School of artists at the turn of the 20th century, together with his close friend Edmund C. Tarbell, whose double portrait of his wife and daughter is a new Museum acquisition on view on the fourth level.
