Rare Meat
In 1957 John Chamberlain began finding his art materials at the junk heap, in particular selecting automobile parts that he used, unaltered, as "readymades," or welded into new forms. These works emerged from and commented upon an ascendant consumer culture, while also exploring a new frontier for abstract painting in the years after the emergence of Abstract Expressionism. The product of numerous complex welds, Rare Meat is nonetheless slyly singular—a vertical swipe of comingled colors and interlocking volumes.
