Atmospheres (1)

Like the adjacent Clocks and Clouds lithographs, these screenprints also take their title from a musical composition by György Ligeti. “Atmospheres” described Ligeti’s concept of “supersaturated polyphony,” a canonic structure so intensive that it resists penetration, as he once observed, “like a densely woven cobweb.” The intricate layers of black, white, and silver inks visible here are the result of transferring multiple drawings to multiple screens that enacted multiple printings. An especially vicious ink used primarily for the creation of braille type added to the buildup of texture.
