Norwegian Pine

The centrality and proportions of this outsize tree govern the entire composition, seeming even to dictate the format of the canvas. In its emphasis on the pine’s majestic span and the richness of its foliage, the painting is less a landscape than a portrait of a stately conifer. In the snow beyond, houses are set into spaces between the branches, in a manner characteristic of the faceted construction of many of Langlais’s works.
