Representative of his earliest wood reliefs, Untitled underscores Langlais’s eye for the subtly varied tones of wood, something he learned in his years of balancing the colors of oil paint. In 1959 the work was included in Langlais’s first solo exhibition of his wood reliefs, at Area Gallery on Tenth Street, a cooperative artists’ space of which he was a founding member.
