Tin Peddler at Sea Bright
Though best known for his opalescent glass windows and lampshades, Louis Comfort Tiffany began his career as a painter. In 1888 he visited the resort community of Sea Bright, on the New Jersey shore, where he painted and photographed local fishermen and seaside vendors. Set against the drab backdrop of a dune shack, the figures’ clothes and the peddler’s wares in Tin Peddler at Sea Bright create a pattern of jewel-toned colors that foreshadow the artist’s later achievements in glass.
