Indian Hunter and His Dog
Although he is not typically associated with the other artists in this room, Paul Manship too created many sculptures of American Indians. Like his contemporaries in the Southwest, he erased all traces of the modern world from these romanticized figures. Nevertheless, Manship’s streamlined style clearly shows the influence of European modernism. His blending of traditional subject matter and modernist aesthetics appealed to educated, middle-class Americans, garnering the artist many commissions for public sculptures and helping to popularize the Art Deco style. Manship originally sculpted Indian Hunter and His Dog for a public fountain in his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota.
