The Silk Merchants (Indian Bazaar)

Edwin Lord Weeks likely executed this richly painted street scene in 1885, when traveling throughout what was then the British Empire in India. His training by French academic painters Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gérôme is evident in his meticulous drawing and emphasis on surface detail as well as in his choice of subject matter. Weeks’s career was dictated largely by his acceptance in the French Salons. He enjoyed great critical success and exhibited widely in Europe and the United States.
