Winter Landscape

John Henry Twachtman revolutionized American art by bringing a European inspired Impressionist style of painting to the United States. He had become disenchanted with the dark, bold colors and glossy finishes of earlier American art. The basic elements of his style can be seen in Winter Landscape: dry finish, uneven texture, broken brushstrokes, light colors, and a rural setting. To achieve some of these effects Twachtman would expose his paintings to the sun and rain, giving them an ethereal quality. He is particularly known for his winter landscapes and is considered to be one of the first American Impressionists.
