The Last Water Lilies

Although he would not actually travel to Japan until thirty years later, John La Farge became one of the first Western artists to embrace Japanese influences, after he encountered ukiyo-e (“pictures of the floating world”) prints while studying in Europe in 1856. Evidence of his fascination with these images can be seen in the pure colors, flattened space, and asymmetrical composition of works such as The Last Water Lilies.
