Sargent, seated comfortably on the deck of the Constellation, a spectacular two-masted schooner owned by the avid Boston yachtsman Herbert Sears. Sargent sketched this light-filled scene, a testament to his tireless artistry, while on a family yachting excursion off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Herbert Sears donated the iron from the Constellation’s hull to the war effort.
