Mount Katahdin from the West Branch of the Penobscot

Tall enough to touch the clouds, Mount Katahdin towers over its surroundings in this painting. With the approaching autumn, the leaves are starting to change into their bright colors, which are reflected on the far side of the river. Notice the man in the canoe with two dogs. Who do you think he is? What do you see in the middle of the boat? A deer? A moose? You can tell it’s actually a woodland caribou by its unique curved antlers. These animals once roamed throughout Maine, but due to overhunting and disease you won’t find them here today.View of Mt. Katahdin from the West Bank of the Penobscot River is filled with many small details. Try to imagine that you’re sitting in the exact spot on the riverbank where the artist created this painting. What do you hear? What else would you see? How would the crisp, clean air feel as it fills your lungs?Tyler Lewtan ’16
