To create this work, Winters asked his collaborators at the print publisher Mixografia to prepare a print “matrix”—the surface on which a print design appears—out of wax-based modeling clay. Ancient petroglyphs were his inspiration. Without mimicking the color of stone, he sought to produce a print that would evoke earthen matter. The cast-copper form made from the drawings that Winters cut into the clay reversed his marks, so that they appear here as raised impressions.
